What is a Railcard?

Railcard is an excellent option to get reduced prices. It is a coupon card that enables you to save more than 1/3 of the cost of valid train tickets. Railcard prices are more or less the same.

Railcard Types

In the UK, there are nine major railcard options available. Here is their brief detail:

Network Railcard

This card offers a discount of 1/3 on the standard rail ticket. It is valid for one year. However, up to three adults aged 16 or more or four children aged 5 to 15 should be travelling with you.

Network railcards can be purchased online or via the national rail station staff at any train ticket booth in the network railcard area.

16-17 Saver

It offers a 50% discount on all regular, off-peak, season and advance tickets. But you should be 16 or 17 to qualify for the 16-17 saver railcard. It is usable for one year or till you turn 18.

16-25 Railcard

It offers a discount of 1/3 on rail fare all over the United Kingdom for the year. This offer includes all the regular as well as advanced first-class tickets.

To qualify for this card, you should be between the ages of 16 and 25 or an adult full-time mature student of at least 26 years.

26-30 Railcard

It also offers a discount of 1/3 on all train travel fares, including regular and advanced business class bookings throughout the United Kingdom.

You should be between the ages of 26 to 30 to qualify for this railcard. It can be purchased any time before turning 31 and may be used up to the day it expires.

Family & Friends Railcard

It offers a discount of 1/3 on all rail tickets to more than four adult individuals and a massive 60 per cent discount on kids’ fares if more than four children between the ages of 5 and 15 are travelling altogether.

Moreover, it also offers you the advantage of two people listed on one card. One person can use this when the other is not travelling. But they should have at least one kid of 5 to 15 years travelling with them. You can also possess more than one railcard.

Two Together Railcard

You should be over the age of 16 to qualify for this railcard. It doesn’t require being with a spouse to enjoy special partner discounts. You may get one with a close friend, a family member, or both, and use it to cut expenses on short excursions, thrilling weekends away, and daily commutes.

Senior Railcard

A Senior Railcard gives people aged over 60 years a 1/3 per cent off on advance payments, off-peak tickets, First Class, and all standard bookings.

The 1-year Senior Railcard is available to buy online and at any National Rail staffed station ticket office. The 3-year Senior Railcard is available to buy online only.

Disabled Persons Railcard

This railcard may save money for a relative or family friends who travels alongside you by receiving a yearlong discount on First-Class or Basic rail tickets for you and your adult partner.

If you suffer from epileptic seizures, vision loss, poor hearing, or any disorder, you could be eligible for the disabled persons railcard.

Veterans Railcard

It offers the bearer a discount of 1/3 on all train journeys and 60 per cent on a child fare if up to four children aged 5 to 15 are travelling together.

To qualify for this veterans railcard, you must have worked in Her His Highnesses Armed Services for a minimum of one day or have been a mercantile sailor who has witnessed legally defined military operations.

Railcard Prices

Except for the digital railcard for Disabled Persons, whose cost is just £20, every other Railcard costs £30 for one year. Yet again, it relies on the kind of digital railcard you possess. Generally, most digital railcards are valid for reduced-price rail travel on weekends, vacations, and off hours. The railcard for disabled persons works anytime, whereas others, such as age-dependent railcards, do not work during off-peak rail travel.

How to Get a Digital Railcard Online and How to Use It?

The simplest method to get a digital railcard is to download your digital rail ticket, reserve a train, and save on most rail fares. You can also choose the railcard of your choice. You might need a passport-size picture to complete the process. And you can immediately get your railcard once you’ve paid for it online. You may use it to view the pricing and obtain discounted tickets when you purchase the ride.

Conclusion

So, this is how a railcard saves you money. This is a significant relief for citizens of the UK in these times when every penny counts. You will be free to go whenever you choose, wherever you want in Great Britain, with up to four adults, without worrying about blowing their travel budget with sky-high rail fares. Therefore, we recommend you to obtain your Railcard as soon as possible from any official retailer of railcards and enjoy travelling with discounted fares.
